Texas ( /ˈtɛksəs/ (help·info)) is the second-largest U.S. state in both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning "friends" or "allies" in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents.

Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston are the fourth- and sixth-largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include San Antonio, El Paso, and Austin—the state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.

Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and the Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. Due to its long history as a center of the American cattle industry, Texas is associated with the image of the cowboy.

The term "six flags over Texas" came from the several nations that had rule over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony in Texas. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. Texas declared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war and its restoration to the Union, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.

In the early 1900s, oil discoveries initiated an economic boom in the state. Texas has since economically diversified. Today it has more Fortune 500 companies than any other U.S. state. With a growing base of industry, the state is a leader in many, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue since 2002 and has the second-highest gross state product.

Is Texas homestead exemption based on who lives at home or who owns it?
Q. Texas has a $15,000 homestead exemption is a person claims that home as their personal residence. Is it based on who owns the home, who lives there, or who paid for the home? Say its a $100,000 home and it is purchased by a daughter and her grandmother. The daughter contributes $1 and the grandmother contributes $99,999 and the purchase it together for $100,000. They are both listed as joint owners of the home. The grandmother lives outside of Texas. Is this possible to qualify for the Texas Homestead exemption?

A. In Michigan, it doesn't matter how much each person contributes - if two names are on the deed, one person can claim the exemption. For example, Mr. Jones helps his son purchase a house so Mr. Jones and Mr. Jones Jr. are on the deed. Mr. Jones Jr. lives there and files the Principal Residence Exemption (that is what it is called here) in his name. He is entitled to the entire exemption, not just half. All states are different and you should check into the state law regarding the Homestead Exemption in Texas. As far as the percentage of ownership, is that someplace in writing that the granddaughter owns less than 1%? According to what I can see about the TX homestead law, you will have to put down what percentage each person owns, but… [cont.]

What is the punishment in Texas for physical abuse of a teenager?
Q. Does anyone know or have any examples as to what the punishment is in Texas for leaving large bruises on arms, waist and thighs after forcefully slapping (7 times), kicking and hitting a 15 year old girl? The offender is her father. He has a clean criminal record and this is the first incident. CPS and County Sheriffs s Dept are involved and child is with mother (ex-wive of abuser) at this time. Waiting for him to be charged... I should have asked - What could he be charged with? Sorry!

A. I pride myself on ALWAYS having the correct answer for any question. And that answer is, I don't know. Nor does anyone else. How can we even speculate on punishment if there isn't even an actual charge yet?

A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner. When a Texas team takes the field against a foreign state, it is an army with banners.

  • One objection I have heard voiced to works of this kind—dealing with Texas—is the amount of gore spilled across the pages. It can not be otherwise. In order to write a realistic and true history of any part of the Southwest, one must narrate such things, even at the risk of monotony.
  • When MacNab blanched, no more stunned than I, Rusk rose and put his arm about his shoulders: "Never forget, son, when you represent Texas, always go first class."
  • Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word. And there’s an opening convey of generalities. A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner.
